2 mi. Run + Plyo + Arm/Back/Ab Tone [TIU]

Still a little disappointed that I has to miss my beach weekend, but I'm getting over it. Being super productive is helping - knocked out a bunch of things that had been lingering on my to-do list (sorry pup, but you were overdue for those shots!) and made substantial progress in the ongoing War on Dirt. And I even made it to the gym today! Wanted to hit it hard to make up for some of the slacking I've been doing recently, so I brought up this combo workout I adapted from ToneItUp's Stars and Stripes workout, throwing in their String Bikini workout for good measure, along with some ab work I made up on the fly.

At work early today so I didn't get as much sleep as I would have liked, but I'm not feeling too many adverse effects of this workout. Was definitely shaking throughout yesterday evening though. Next time I'm going to try to move a little quicker and fit in one more mile in the hour.

20:00 Jump Rope + 20:00 Row

Last day to kill it before the wedding! Still trying to focus on my upper body/upper back, since everything else will be under the dress (abs? unnecessary!). I'm working out way earlier than usual today since I took the day off and I have a nail appointment at 11, so hopefully it won't have too much of an adverse effect. I never know what to eat when I work out first thing since I know I need something, but if I eat too much I feel weighed down. Think I'm gonna go with toast (I love toast!).

8:00 Abs + 15:00 Jump Rope + 26:00 Bike

Running behind with my posting, so I'm just going to throw this up here. This was another day of mixing lifting and cardio, with the focus on my abs! This was also my only day during the week when I didn't have anything else planned, so I wanted to pile on the cardio. Since I was kinda hungover wanted to read, I had originally planned to then work the stair stepper for 25 minutes then do 15 minutes of jump rope, but when I was done with my ab work both the steppers were taken! So I did my jump roping instead, and while the steppers were momentarily free while I was bouncing about, they were occupado again when I was finished (So Annoyed -- more on that later). Since I didn't feel like waiting I switched out the stepper for some bike intervals.

I was surprised at how well I took on the bike, considering my bottomless tequila brunch the day before. It wasn't quite as fast as a non-hungover workout, but I'll take it! Upper back ended up pretty sore, probably because of the jump rope. Still angry at all gym goers.

15:00 Jump Rope

Very little time to workout today -- it's 'Prom' night! No, not actual Prom -- it's my company's annual Winter Gala. Every January they rent out a museum for us to frolic about in; we get dressed up super fancy and drink their booze whilst trying not to ruin the priceless dinosaurs or diamonds or canoes or whatever. There aren't a ton of opportunities in my life to actually wear a shiny dress, so I always enjoy the excuse. This year I ordered a new dress, which is currently sitting at the FedEx store, conveniently located on my route home from the office. Inconveniently, my wallet is sitting on the table at home and the FedEx guy needs my ID to release my package. So I have to go home, come back, AND get prettified before 8 PM, which isn't going to leave a lot of time for exercise. If I manage to squeeze in 15 minutes, it's going to be this 15 minute jump rope workout from the Women's Health Big Book of 15 Minute Workouts.

Couple things ended up happened -- first and most importantly, I decided to stop by FedEx before I went home just to see if I could get my package without my license, and the guy at the counter totally accepted my work badge as a valid ID! Win! So since I didn't have to trudge all the way home and back, I got to spend a little extra time at the gym -- I threw in the ab workout I skipped on Thursday to the end and took the opportunity to do some extra stretching.

Turns out I suck at jump roping. Or, rather, I suck at jump roping fast. I can keep my little moderate pace forever, but the second I speed up I start whipping myself with the rope. Not fun. So instead of speeding through 2 minutes, I added some butt kicks and high knees. Then the double-under jumps were a disaster, so instead of struggling through them for 2 minutes and spending most of that time tripping over the rope, I gave up after 1 minute and moved on. I added in more single-foot jumps later to make up for it. I also got bored 'running' so I went back to the butt kicks/high knees, which I figure are pretty much the same but harder.

Also, I somehow ended up doing 16 minutes instead of the 15 it was supposed to take. Don't really know how that happened, honestly...

{EDIT} -- the first two rounds of single foot jumping were supposed to be :30 each, not a minute. So I feel less bad about having to cut that minute in half and do :30/leg twice because after :30 my calves were ready to fall off

20:00 Jump Rope + Total-Body Circut

So apparently, when I don't write down what I'm doing, I tend to do the same workouts over and over. I can't tell you how many times I've done my two standard stationary bike/treadmill workouts these past weeks, but it's waaay too many. Yes, they're tried and true and I know they get the job done, but they also make me Bored. And when I get Bored, I resent having to go to the gym at all and end up eyeing the ellipticals because if I use those, I can probably take out a good chunk of my book while 'working out' and it still counts because something >> nothing, right? ...right?

So I'm trying to find more workout inspiration between the holidays. I'd love to find more entertaining things to do at my gym that don't require much planning on my part, but my Gold's is fairly bare-bones and I can't stand the cheerleader that runs 'Body Aerobics'. Yes, I could get up at 5 AM the one day a week they offer Zumba, but let's be honest, that's not going to happen. Instead I'm turning to the interwebz to motivate me. I'm hoping I can change it up enough to keep myself entertained and not-fat through the dark hours of winter [true story: sunset at 4:47, approximately 73 minutes before I'm allowed out of my cage].

This workout was inspired by this one by the Fitnessista. I kept her idea of the jump rope/circuit combo, but I'm putting a jump rope session between each circuit instead of just after the first one - it should go jump rope [8 minutes], circuit 1, jump rope [6 minutes], circuit 2, jump rope [6 minutes], circuit 3(, jump rope [6 minutes]? Maybe if I'm not dead). I also changed up the exercises a bit to hit more muscle groups.

Here's to hoping there will be enough floor space today to use the jump rope!

30:00 Park Workout

The original plan for today was to go lift heavy things at the gym, but I'm currently house-hunting as was invited to an open-house at the last minute. The open house is near my current place, which is not near the gym, so going back OUT of my house after leaving work early and being nearby would have been an effort of will I do not possess. Plus, my dog looked lonely. To the park!

I adapted this workout from one I found on one of the food blogs I follow: The Part-Time Housewife. Every week she puts out a new workout in her 'Sweaty Saturday' column. I didn't quite like the original workout as it was presented -- I didn't think it was evenly balanced between plyometric exercises and static ones, so I shuffled things around a bit and made it my own. I also didn't feel like busting out the timer for only part of a workout, so I switched some of the timed sets to reps.

This workout definitely took longer than I thought it wood. Partially because the dog was being needy and I couldn't get through a dozen turns of a jump rope without him getting in the way, demanding I throw his ball, but also because it turns out jump roping is hard! I kept tripping over it, or over my own feet, or getting it caught on a branch or something. I'll likely do this workout again, but I'd like to get it going quickly enough that I can do 3 sets in a reasonable amount of time. Or I'll transfer it into a HITT workout and go for time instead of reps. Either way, I hope next time it outdoor temp is less than 95 with 90% humidity. That would help.
