Total Body Tone [Blogilates]

Yesterday was miserable so I didn't get a workout done, which means I need to fit one in today. We have brunch plans, luckily the people we're going with today don't get up much before noon so I have time to slip one in this morning. Boyfriend is going to the actual gym, but I've done that a fair bit this week (for all that they've been shortie workouts) so I think I'm going to stay home. Plus, I had a hard time getting out of bed and would rather work out than spend useless time in transit. It's early and my brain isn't functioning at its optimal level yet so I'm going for something easy - the blogilates 100 workout.

I guess working out first thing in the morning isn't really my bag. I kind of wandered through these exercises, definitely not giving it my all. It took me like a hundred years to get through the squats alone, not to mention the fact I wandered into the kitchen at some point for water. I did get all the way through the tacked on blogilates workout, so... there's that. It's a 'something better than nothing' kind of day...

Blogilates - Cardio

Happy Veterans Day! I have the day off (yaaaaay), unfortunately boyfriend does not (booo). I'm actually not that torn up about it though - I'm weirdly excited to actually clean our house after 6 weekends in a row of being out of town; I know if he was around we'd get distracted by brunch or some such and nothing would get clean. Do you have any idea how many loads of laundry I have to fold? Like.. 9. No joke. Plus I'm still mid-wardrobe-cutover, so I've got to get them sweaters out of boxes and put away the mini dresses until April (let's be honest - May).

As I usually do when I'm left to my own devices, today's workout came in pieces, like 10-15 minutes each. I prefer this method because it helps break up the monotony of the boring things I should be doing (working, folding laundry, vacuuming...). And the bright side is I usually end up working out extra long without even noticing! That wasn't the case today, sadly, but I still got in some decent sweating.

Total Body Tone [TIU]

Happy Halloween!! I LOVE Halloween -- I love finding the perfect costume, getting dressed up and seeing what everyone else has cleverly thrown together. Which is why I'm super disappointed that I've pretty much missed Halloween this year. Last weekend's wedding and this weekend's camping trip have knocked out both Hallo-weekends, and tonight is 'madly prep for the camping trip' night. There are tons of errands to run, firewood to obtain, bags to pack and food to prep so that we can get out of here in a timely fashion tomorrow. Last year we didn't prep properly, spent 3 hours running around looking for a fire pit (we went to three home depots. THREE) because the one we had ordered off Amazon got rerouted due to Sandy and we needed something to cook on, didn't end up leaving until almost 10 PM, arrived just before midnight, and had to set up our tents in complete blackness because they turned the lights off at 12. I was thisclose to turning around and going home. But I didn't, we had fun, and I learned my lesson: advanced planning! So here I am now, sacrificing my Halloween to make oatmeal cakes so I don't starve to death. Sigh. At least I got away with wearing my Ninja Turtles shirt to work today.

Only a little bit of time to work out today due to the afore-mentioned errands and baking, so I did a quick toning routine in the 20 minute intervals my oatmeal cakes were baking in. Routine is from ToneItUp, a special Halloween workout.

Distance Run - 3.65 mi

Kickball day! Which means no time for a real workout, but since I'm still working off the massive amounts of butter I ingested over the weekend (and I slacked yesterday) I need to do *something*. So, I'll run to the kickball fields! They're less than 2 miles away, but if I turn right instead of left and head up the hill before I go down to the fields, plus run a bit beyond and come back I can stretch that to 4, which is a completely reasonable distance for a proper workout.

Comments
My hamstrings were much sorer than I originally thought they were, which meant I was not moving nearly as fast as I had planned. That, coupled with the fact I got out of my house about 5 minutes later than I should have meant I had to cut the run short since I wanted to make it to kickball on time. Oh well, at least I got in something.

I laugh sometimes though - 3 years ago or so I would have considered running 3 1/2 miles a massive accomplishment. Back then, 3 was pretty much the norm, and more often than not I took a puppy playtime break about a mile in (we would run by the park and he'd get so excited!). Now, I'm disappointed in myself if I don't make it at least 5, but 6 is better, and more often than not I'm the one dragging the pup through those last miles. Sometimes I get distracted and run more, although 10 is my max and I've only done that a couple of times (I have better things to do than devote that much time to running, thankyouverymuch).

25:00 Incline Treadmill + Butt Tone

Still having weird outside-the-shin issues that I blame on that drunken Satuday hike. So, obviously, to test my theory, I'm going to do a incline treadmill workout. If I can feel those muscles hurt, that's what I'm going to blame. If not, well, blame the gremlins?

Well, either it wasn't the hike or the walk worked out the last of the soreness, because my legs don't hurt at all. A little bummed though - I would have thought my hamstrings would have hurt at least a little bit. Especially since the two mini butt workouts I did were killer - I could barely bridge by the end! Better luck next time, I guess.

5.5 mi Hike

No gym today - I'm in the mountains! Sort of. Or a valley. Not really sure which. But my friends and I rented a cabin in the Wilderness and decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather (and the fact the government reopened, thus reopening the national parklands) to go for a hike. Or a walk. Depends on how you look at it.

We started off strong -- had a nice mimosa breakfast, loaded up a backpack with beers, and set off for the trail! According to the map it was only like a mile, maaaaybe a mile and a half away. We could totally walk there, do the 2 mile trail around the woods, then walk home. Easy! Aside from the fact there are no sidewalks in the woods and we were walking literally down the middle of the road (CAR! *scatter*), getting weird looks from all the locals, everything seemed great. We did lose a party member about 150 yards from our front door, but hiking isn't really her thing, so we pushed on!

Fast forward an hour: we still hadn't reached the trail head. So much for maps.We also hadn't counted on the fact we were walking up a mountain. Slowly. Walking. So slowly.

We did eventually find the trail head, but at that point we were Done. And we still had to make it back. And the trail was closed! Regardless, we figured we were There so we should at least set foot on the trail -- we walked it about a tenth of a mile, climbing over felled trees and down a creek bed (maybe the trail blockade was right?) and actually ended up running into the Appalachian Trail. We took photos, someone explained to me at length that people actually do walk the trail for weeks at a time, setting up their tent wherever (why would you do this?). Like, on the side of the trail. Or in the middle of the trail. Am I the only one that thinks that's weird? What if there are other people and you're all camped out in the middle of everything, takin up all the space? How rude.

After we found the App Trail we turned around and booked it home so we'd make it there before dark. We made it, only to find out that we didn't have any electricity. So we ate chips and salsa on the patio until it came back and we could check on the crock pots. Not a bad day.

We mapped our walk when we got home and discovered it was actually over 2 miles from our cabin to the trail head, give or take. Plus whatever off-roading we did on the trail. And it was nearly 1000 vertical feet. No wonder we were tired!

Blogilates - Abs/Cardio

Yesterday was a rainy, disgusting fail. Didn't get up early to do my abs like I promised myself, didn't work out after work since I was full of sore and crabbiness. But, some days you just need a rest, right? Right.

But today was infinitely better - I worked from home! I love working from home - it lets me get so much more done over the course of my day. Since a lot of my job involves solving other people's immediate problems, if there's a period where there aren't any problems I don't have much to do. When this happens in the office, I stare out the window or try to stealthily check Facebook (or update this blog...). When it happens while I'm at home, I Get Shit Done. Laundry, dishes, dog-walking, post-office-ing, and working out! Today I decided that whenever I got bored, I would do one Blogilates video. By the end of the day, I had managed to do like 6 of them. Saved me the time/effort of actually going to the gym and meant I made it to the bar before the Bears game started. Horray!

Ok, so 5, not 6, but still a good workout! Although I meant to do more - I was aiming for one an hour. Stupid work got in the way. Those burpees were especially hard - I have a blister on my hand from  my hardwood floors! And today I'm super sore, maybe the intense cardio death workout I had planned for today will have to change...

Blogilates - Cardio

Happy National Back to Work day! Is that really a thing? Probably not. Otherwise every Monday would be national back to work day, and that would be depressing. Or maybe it would make it more exciting? I don't know. At least I'm not back yet! BF and I took advantage of the long weekend to put in some face-time with his parental units in Nashville. We did some cool things - had a nice dinner at Opryland Hotel (fun fact: they make the staff use underground tunnels to get around because apparently seeing people working ruins vacations) and saw a show at the Grand Ol' (Old? Ole?) Oprey. The show was entertaining, for all that I didn't recoginze a single one of the performers. It's an interesting gig they have going there - apparently there's a show every Saturday (along with some Tuesdays and Fridays) with different acts every week. As a performer you have to be invited to perform there once, which gets you into 'the club' so to speak (I bet they have jackets...), and after that if you're in town you can just kind of show up and do your thing. It's also broadcast on the radio, complete with old-timey radio commercials and the radio guy doin' his thing on the side of the stage.

Sunday we took the time to wander downtown Nashville and do a little shopping (I was very tempted by a buy-one-get-two-free deal at one of the boot stores. Not because I actually want cowboy boots, but because that seems like a steal!) before bar-hopping around the 'honky tonks'. I quite enjoyed the live music coming from EVERYWHERE - almost every bar had a live act of some type. I'm typically not a live music fan because I have an issue with absurdly high volume levels, but I had a good time regardless. We managed to end our bar crawl at an English pub (no idea how we found this place) which had AMAZING fries (chips!) covered in Parmesan cheese and deliciousness. It was a perfect drunk-oclock snack.

Sadly, Labor Day weekend is now over, but I'm immensely grateful that I took an extra day off. After driving for 11 straight hours yesterday I"m in no mood to go sit at my desk and deal with emails. Something I can do today? Get back into a semblance of a workout routine! Going to start slow with some light(ish) cardio and get back into it hard tomorrow. BF was supposed to go to the gym with me today but he's napping instead so a home workout it is! This is the 9/3/2013 Blogilates workout.

That was harder than I expected it to be! Good job Cassie. The 20/20 was especially hard - I could.not.do the tuck jumps, so I substituted squat jumps instead. Something about my quads just was not having anything to do with tucking in mid-air. Also, full confession: I split the 20 burpees into two sets of 10, the first done in the burpee place in the workout and the second at the end. At least they got done! I didn't much care for the ballet challenge though - I didn't feel like I was doing much of anything until I started lunge jumping. Next time I think I'll sub in a different video.

ZCUT #4

I was invited to play in a soccer game later today, but as a goalkeeper, so there's not a lot of exercise involved. I'm doing it as a favor to a friend as their usual keeper is out of town and I couldn't help them out last week. Since I already skipped a workout yesterday to run errands, I'd rather not lose this entire day, exercise-wise, too; I'm going to take the pup to the park and throw down a quick tabatta-style workout. This workout is from ZuzukaLight and her ZCUT Power Cardio series, and since I want to record my scores I'm going to refrain from mentioning which exercises I was doing out of respect for Zuzuka's finished project. Don't want to give everything away!

Well, I definitely did not end up playing goalie, and now I am full of hurting. Whew. Not only did I not stand around as I was expecting, but it also turned out to be an indoor game, not outdoor, which means I spent 50 minutes running all-out for 3 minutes at a time... exhausting! And of course I haven't worn my cleats in a Good Long While (like... a year), so I have some lovely blisters to complement my dead leg muscles. But I did score the winning goal! Worth it.

16:00 HITT

I have plans to go see a comedy show after work today (Second City - whoo Chicago!), so any exercise I got would be whatever I could wake myself up for and get done in the morning. However, I am the.worst. at getting up in the morning for workouts. I just can't seem to drag myself out of bed when I know there's sweating looming in my so very immediate future. The irony is that once I'm actually out of bed, it takes me about 8 seconds to be fully on top of my game. You think that would motivate me to get out of bed -- "just stand, you know you'll be ready to tackle anything if you just PUT YOUR FEET ON THE FLOOR" -- but it doesn't.

Boyfriend, however, is expect get-out-of-bed-er, and when I heard him getting *home* from his workout at 7AM, after waking up at 5:30 and only getting like 4 hours of sleep, and having worked out hard the day before, I was sufficiently guilted into standing. Unfortunately at that point I only had about 20 minutes to do something before I had to get ready for work, so I opted for a HITT-style workout. I say 'HITT-style' because this wasn't exactly "high intensity". While it did involve moving, and the timing was the same, I didn't have sufficient time to warm up so I wasn't exactly going all-out. But as I always say, something is better than nothing!

I was just making this workout up as I went, but in retrospect I could have balanced the obliques vs. frontal abs situation better. Distance Run + Booty Tone [TIU]

I wasn't originally planning on running today (since yesterday was such a fail I had planned to go hard at the gym) but it's too nice outside to keep the pup indoors all day! So I've rearranged my week a bit and decided to take advantage of the fact it's not raining for the first time in a few days. Yay not raining! However, to make up for the yester-fail, I'm GOING to add a TIU butt toner after my miles. I will I will I will. Who knows, I might even get crazy and do it twice! Three times?!?

PS: I had my first iced coffee of the year today, does it show?

Core Workout [ToneItUp] + 2 mi. Jog

Such a gorgeous day today! Since I typically feel bad for romping around outdoors and leaving the pup to stew inside, but also I'm not up for a run today, I'm going to try something a little different: I'm going to take my (equipment-free!) workout outside, give the dog a squeeky ball, and hope he entertains himself long enough to get some reps in. We'll see how it works out, but I'm hoping this becomes a regular warm-weather thing. Everyone deserves some time in the sun!

Today's workout is day two of this week's Tone It Up schedule. I'm not going to lie, it doesn't look like much. There's an ab workout plus a short full-body workout. As far as I can tell I'm only supposed to go through each series once, and there don't seem to be TOO many reps involved. I might have to tack on something else as the end, but we'll see!

Blogilates - Upper Body

Uggggh so it begins.... baseball season that is. Boyfriend has season tickets, which means we spend a lot of time at the park. And while I love a day at the ballpark as much as the next beer fan, according to last year the season tends to spell disaster for my workout schedule and my eating habits (and my wallet, but that's a whole other story). Which is a terrible one-two anti-health knockout. Especially on those days where we buy tickets 3 minutes before the game starts. So this year I'm trying to do things differently! By getting up early and working out and making sure to be extra-super healthy throughout the day.

Anyone that knows me even slightly will tell you that I am not really a morning person. Yes, I'm awake the second I get out of bed and ready to be productive about 8 seconds after that, but actually removing covers and putting feet on the floor is So Hard. It's always too cold out there, or I'm tired, or I've already overslept a little and now there clearly isn't enough time to do ANYTHING but sleep for another half hour, or one of a zillion other probably really good excuses. However, I also have to be in a wedding next week and actually look good in pictures, and that's motivation enough for the next dozen days or so. I'm hoping after that it'll just be no big thing.

Since this is pretty much my first (maybe third) time getting up and immediately attempting to sweat, I kept it on the easy side and did an upper body Blogilates routine. No jumping up and down, no fear of pulling a hamstring because I've been lying prone the 8 (ok like 6, so sure me) hours immediately previous, no gym shoes. Just some lying on the floor, a whole hell of a lot of pushups, and hopefully some calories burned.

Upper back is already tired and it's not even tomorrow yet. Maybe I DID actually do something!

ZCUT #10 + Blogilates - Abs

As expected, a ridiculously over-the-top weekend with the pops. Happy hour (on a boat!), pizza, boozy brunch, ginormous pasta platters, slightly less boozy but infinitely more buttery buffet brunch, and then Easter ham and biscuits to top everything off. My body is literally pissed at me -- sleeping last night was a chore due to the intense stomachache. I think it was the pounds of butter I likely secretly consumed. Or salt poisoning. Probably both.

Funny story: dog is right there with me on the stomachache train. This weekend he managed to both steal and consume most of a costco-sized bag of turkey jerky AND the half-ham that was sitting on the counter waiting to be turned into leftovers. After the jerky he drank about 3 gallons of water because his tiny doggie brain was overwhelmed with salt. And then demanded to go outside at inconvenient hours. Naturally. And the ham? Neatly removed from the 2-inch deep roasting pan sitting on the counter WITHOUT KNOCKING OVER THE PAN. I swear that dog is part ninja. Or mountain goat. Probably both.

Regardless, it's all veggies and whole grains and workouts for me. Especially in these last two weeks before the wedding (first-time bridesmaid... I have no idea what's going on ever. But I WILL look good in this dress damnit. After I remember to pick it up. Which I WILL NOT FORGET to do!).

Well. That was lame. My original plan was to do this entire Blogilates workout after my jumping around, but I failed. After jumping around I just didn't have the heart to keep going. ZCUT is getting progressively more difficult (I'm on to you, Zuzanna...) and it's taking more and more time and more and more effort to get through it. When I then tried to immediately go into the spring fling workout there was rampant failure. So I said fine, I'll move that to the end, I'll do the rest of the videos and come back to it! I did get through the obliques vid, then the ab challenge mostly killed my already aching quads (I have a real bad tendency to over-use my hip flexors and under-use my lower abs. I'm trying to work on it) and I mostly ended up flopping around. The final straw was the the total-body video didn't load to my phone properly (wrong video format or something). To add insult to injury, the inner thigh challenge involved panty flashing the gym for a solid 5 minutes. So I told myself I'd finish those two, plus the spring fling vid, at home with the computer. Clearly that didn't happen -- after stopping at the grocery store and remembering/tackling a literal mountain of Easter cooking dishes (our dishwasher is broken, kill me now) I just didn't have the energy. Yes, I'm full of excuses. Yes, I hate myself for it. But... tomorrow is another day!

Distance Run - 6.2 mi

Friday! My dad's in town, which means it's guaranteed to be an awesome weekend full of amazing food. Tonight we're going on a cruise on the river, in theory to see the spring blooms. Unfortunately the blooms haven't bloomed, so in reality we'll just have happy hour on the river. And then we're going to my favorite pizza place and probably eating a heap of prosciutto. So I'm making it a priority today to get out of work with enough time to go for a run. Dog will be excited about the extra love too!

What a disaster. Next time I think it's a good idea to go running mid-afternoon during tourist season, remind me it's not. Ugh. I had originally planned to run to Lincoln, but after dealing with crowds for the first mile and a half I gave up that plan. Instead I ran up the hill and into the residential neighborhoods. Which were nicely empty, but holy stop lights batman. I think I hit nearly every single one! And of course it was also rush hour, so there was very little ability to sneak across on reds because I probably would have been hit by a car. I probably stood around for 10 minutes over the course of this run! So terrible. And then a few miles away from home dog decided he didn't want to run any more. I had to practically drag him the last 2 miles, AND I had to end the run about half a mile earlier than I wanted to because he sat down and refused to move any more. I think it's because boyfriend took him running earlier this week -- I'll have to remember to space out our workouts more. All in all, a disappointing effort. But at least it was something...

ZCUT #9

My general goal in life (I don't really do 'goals', can you tell?) is to try to be better about working out even if I don't have a whole big chunk of time to devote to it. Especially in weeks, like, this one, where I have kaboodles of fun things planned during my after-work hours. Yesterday it was a (really, kind of boring) play, today it's a work 'networking event' (read: sponsored happy hour!!), Friday will be the river cruise... in my life, there's never a dearth of opportunities to skip a workout. And usually I'm pretty good about not giving in too often or too many times in a row. But there's always room for improvement.

With that in mind, yesterday, when I knew I would be leaving work and going directly to the theater for this play, I tried to get up early for a workout. Unfortunately, I vastly underestimated how long it would take to put on some appropriate clothes, have a snack, and set up my workout station. By the time I had all that done, I only had about 15 minutes before I needed to start getting ready for work. 15 minutes wasn't nearly enough time to do what I had planned, and it was still too stiff from sleep to attempt to jump about (worried about pulling cold muscles). I ended up doing my usual plank/pushup/squat/lunge/etc warmup and a 10 minute dynamic stretching routine. Better than nothing?

So then today when I learned there was a Gold's literally a block from our happy hour bar, I knew I had to put in the effort to do something more. Yes, I will miss half an hour of drinking, but it won't kill me (probably). Will people judge me? Maybe. We're pretty serious about our happy hours 'round these parts. But that won't kill me either (...probably).

Dear baby Jesus that was depressing. I can't even... it was bad. It was this gym! I can't be the only one that has trouble working out in unfamiliar locations, and this was a gym I'd never set foot in before. Pretty much doomed from the start. First I had to ask where the locker room was (a nondescript, unlablled door right next to an identical door that said 'staff only'), when i was standing about 3 feet away from it. Then there wasn't anywhere comfortable to set up shop. Now, I don't need much space to do my thing. Enough space for a plank, ideally nothing overhead I can jump and hit my head on, maybe enough floor space for a mat if I'm feeling frisky. But even so, there was nowhere for me to go. At my gym, there's a pretty clearly defined space for people to do non-traditional working out. It's away from the lifting machines and the racks, near-ish to the dumbbells but clearly separately stacked with mats and BOSU balls and steps and what have you. In this gym, that space up a few stairs, weirdly lording above the rest of the gym, and of course was 'reserved' for 'personal training only' between 5 and 8 PM. Which, if I'd have to guess, is probably one of the busiest times of the day. The rest of the 'open space' in this gym were really hallways between the machines. There was a sort of open central atrium space, but it still felt more like a fat hallway than somewhere someone could grab a box and hop around. I ended up in some space between a tricep push-down machine and one of those cable machines where you can set the arms anywhere from way over head to next to the ground. I definitely had to move once or twice because people wanted to get around me or use the machines nearby and I didn't want to lunge kick them in the face. UNCOMFORTABLE. And then of course the ZCUT for today was killer. Truth: I took at 30 second break between rounds 1 and 2 and stopped the timer. Originally once I was finished with that I was going to do a quick Jillian Michaels routine, but I didn't have any more jumping in me. So instead I headed over to a treadmill (an incline one, since they only had like 4 normal ones. And I picked a treadmill because there was a SINGLE, occupied, stair stepper, there were two rowing machines randomly in the middle of the floor, occupied by a pair of blonds that had been there longer than I'd been at the gym, leisurely pulling and gossiping away, and to get to the few stationary bikes I would have had to impose on the sanctity of the trainers-only loft and scoot past the other bikers, on their stationary bikes, which were single spaced in an area that reminded me of a balcony), with the intention of knocking out a 15 minute interval workout. Naturally, about 2 minutes in my calves cramped and I couldn't run any more. I tried to quickly stretch it out, but my legs were having none of that. So I gave up after half a mile and used the rest of my time to stretch. At that point I had had enough and was just ready for a g-d beer, so I hightailed it out of there and found my coworkers. Hopefully, I never find need to go back to that place again...

ZCUT #7 + Total Body Kettlebell + 15:00 Stairs

I finally have some more time this week to get to the gym! It's been a busy few days -- after a strong start to the week I took of Wednesday as my rest day, only to have my best intentions corrupted Thursday when boyfriend and I decided to get in on the NCAA March Madness excitements and watch some games at a bar. Luckily, all was not completely lost -- on Wednesday I did take the dog for a 2 mile walk, and yesterday I managed to fit in ZCUT #1 before heading to the bar. It's supposed to be a stand-alone workout, right? So I can kind of pretend I did something good for me? Because going to the bar and eating a mountain of nachos? ...err....

Anyway, to make up for it I plan on hitting the gym hard today, and hopefully Saturday too! In addition to today's ZCUT workout I'm also going to add in a kettlebell workout from Pumps & Iron that I've been anxious to try. I don't have a ton of experience with kettlebells, due entirely to the fact that up until about 3 months ago my gym kept them in one of the offices. What am I supposed to do with that? Can I just walk in and take one? Are they only for special trainer peoples? Is there some sort of test? I'm so confused! But then they moved them out into the open and I've been using them occasionally. Always nice to have extra options, right? Right!

That was a beast and it was awesome! Definitely going to be trying this workout again. I'm mostly feeling it in my upper/mid back muscles, and a bit in the shoulders/quads. Funny story - after I was done with everything and stretching one of the gym trainers came by to introduce himself. He said he was the kettlebell trainer of the gym and invited me to enroll in his upcoming 8-week class session. In his words 'you should try Saturdays - it's the beginners class and we focus mainly on form.' So basically, someone who knows what they're doing called me out on the fact I have no clue. Awesome, thanks Anthony!
